A Chaffle Recipe Keto Dieters Can Make to Stay the Course!!
As part of my turkey leftover series, I thought it was time I introduced my BBQ audience to the Chaffle. What is the Chaffle You ask? Well, let me tell you that the chaffle is a game changer! First of all, it is a great bread alternative that is grain free and a an easy way to repurpose smoked and grilled meats while staying low carb!
The Chaffle Recipe is Keto friendly option to make bread so you can have those things you really missed when you were eating Keto, Low carb and paleo: SANDWICHES!!
Plus, since most sandwich bread is loaded in yucky preservatives and glyphosate (did you know that grains are sprayed with a nice dose of RoundUp as a dessicant before being harvested?) you are cutting out a ton of gross chemicals from your diet by making your own sandwich bread.
What is a Chaffle?
The world CH-AFFLE comes from the pairing of the words CHEESE and WAFFLE. Essentially, mixing cheese with eggs, almond flour and a bit of baking powder make a chaffle- the sandwich bread made with NO GRAIN that makes it naturally low carb.
The KETO Chaffle
A Chaffle, since is it made with Cheese, is definitely keto but not paleo because PALEO is dairy free. However, if you’re not strict PALEO, this KETO chaffle recipe will get you by when you really want a quick sandwich bread that you can make with ingredients on hand.
If you’ve ever wanted to really know the differences between the KETO diet and the PALEO diet, I recommend this article I wrote a while back that digs into core differences and I give my own preferences for short term versus long term adoption of both of these styles of eating.
Ingredients for this Chaffle Recipe: Keto, Low Carb and Grain Free
All you need are a few simple ingredients for this Chaffle Recipe Keto Dieters or those on a grain free diet can use as their go-to sandwich bread.
I recommend buying ORGANIC whenever possible for all the ingredients below.
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella (I’ve used other cheese such as parm and they impart a nice flavor but Mozz seems to make for the best texture)
- 1 tbsb blanched almond flour
- ¼ tsp baking powder
Tools Needed for this Chaffle Recipe:
- Waffle Maker
- Non stick spray, coconut oil or butter- you want to coat the waffle iron well so the waffles don’t stick.
In order to make a chaffle, you’re going to need a waffle iron. I’m a big fan of this Waffle Maker/griddle combo by Black And Decker, I’ve had it since 2013 and it’s still going strong and I can even use it for making melts. But, with the popularity of waffles these days, it is easy to find all kinds of waffle irons at all kinds of price points. I like that this one makes square waffles.
Turkey Leftover Recipes: The Turkey Chaffle Sandwich
The chaffle is an amazing way to enjoy a post Thanksgiving sandwich while getting back on that Keto or low carb horse after indulging on Turkey Day.
However, the Chaffle should not just be limited to sandwiches. They are an amazing way to reuse your other leftovers in creative ways. Now you can have a pulled pork sandwich while staying LOW CARB. Plus, a chaffle has only 4 ingredients versus store bought sandwich bread which is loaded in gross stuff.
Remember those “stuffing waffles” you saw on Restaurant Menus a while back? (or maybe that was just me! lol) Well, this basic Chaffle recipe can be adapted to add in whatever you want to mix in such as stuffing, cranberry sauce, berries or whatever suits your fancy.
Many people make Dessert chaffles and mix in pumpkin, sugar free chocolate or whatever suits your fancy.
For the Turkey Chaffle Sandwich, I recommend pairing the smoked turkey with a generous amount of that Alabama White BBQ Sauce and a big thick slice of tomato and LOTS of salt and pepper and of course, hot sauce.
See there? I got you back on your healthy plan and you could still have your Turkey Sandwich!
