Pretzel bread is all the rage these days- so much so I was able to find pretzel buns at my local Publix bakery! Beer and Pretzels are a match made in heaven (I learned this first hand as a German exchange student oh so many moons ago) so I thought, what would be better for some tailgating fare?

There’s really not much to making these- which is why these Italian Sausage dogs are perfect for a tailgate- they add a gourmet touch without being too fussy. I grilled some Italian Sausage I got from the “Pig of the Month” club I discovered on Opensky (OpenSky is like a social network for discovering cool artisanal stores- great for a foodie like myself!) I grilled the sausages, and while they were grilling I warmed the pretzel buns on the top rack of the grill.

Ingredients

  • Italian Sausage (or your sausage of choice)
  • Pretzel Buns – I found these at my local grocery store bakery
  • Sliced Provolone Cheese
  • Spicy Mustard

Instructions

I sliced the buns lengthwise and placed a slice of provolone cheese onto the bun as it was warming on the rack. When the sausage was done (you can check via an internal read thermometer– you want a minimum of 145 degrees) I placed them into the buns. I served with some spicy dijon mustard.

My dog Haley, really wants a sausage dog for herself.

Do you have a fun spin on hotdogs? I’d love to hear your ideas!
