This cranberry orange bread pudding recipe is perfect for using up day-old bread and any cranberries you might have leftover from the Holidays to repurpose into brunch or an easy dessert that is great on its own and even better paired with ice cream for a decadent dessert.
The pairing of cranberry and orange is a flavor match in heaven and the citrus compliments the tartness of the cranberries and the heat of baking this pudding make the cranberries explode with juiciness. The orange liqueur adds great flavor in this recipe but can easily be swapped with orange juice if you don’t have Triple Sec on hand (which is a go-to ingredient for making margaritas).
You can bake this recipe in your oven or on your grill- I often use the grill if it is still hot from cooking the first course. To make in your grill, you simply turn on two burners to high heat and cook on the unlit burner, easily recreating an oven environment. If you are using your grill, make sure to use cast iron which can easily be used on the grill or in your oven.
For this recipe, brioche or challah bread is the preferred bread of choice but any leftover bread will work. Alternate the ingredient you have on hand to make it your own and reuse leftovers in a delicious way!
Ingredients for this Cranberry Orange Bread Pudding:
- 1.5 cups of milk
- 4 eggs
- 1/4 cup triple sec
- 2 tblsp orange zest
- 1 cup cranberries
- 1/2 cup craisins
- 1/2 cup organic sugar OR honey
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- 2 tbsp honey
- powdered sugar
- 3/4 loaf challah or brioche bread, torn into small pieces
Notes on Ingredients and why it’s important to buy organic, especially for bread and grains:
When making this recipe, opt for organic when you can. Because grains are sprayed with glyphosate (Round Up) to make them easier to harvest, all grains get a heavy spray of this herbicide before they make it to your plate. That is what is responsible for the gluten intolerance epidemic, in my opinion. If you want to learn more, check out the Glyphosate report you can find at the Institute for Responsible Technology’s website and you can see the levels for your self. For this reason, I recommend using organic bread for this recipe and ANY recipe. It is hard to find organic brioche or challah so I have also recreated this this recipe with organic sourdough that I was able to find.
Tools Needed:
If baking on your grill, I recommend using Cast Iron. My favorite cast iron is Stargazer Cast Iron. You can use cast iron in your oven, on the stovetop and on your grill. If you love cooking in cast iron, check out my Cast Iron Cooking recipes.
Steps to Make this Cranberry Orange Bread Pudding
- Mix all ingredients together and let sit for 20 minutes.
- Oil your baking dish dish with butter or coconut oil.
- Pour into a cast iron skillet (if using your grill) or a pie dish or 8X8 casserole dish.
- Bake on indirect heat of the grill for 30 minutes until the bread pudding rises and gets golden on the edges. If using an oven, preheat the oven to 350 degrees and let bake for 30 minutes until the pudding has risen and turned golden brown. If baking on your grill, set your grill to be two burners on, one off, to create an ambient heat environment and then place your pudding on the indirect side.
- Bake this on the grill and your family will think you are the grilling Goddess (perfect if it’s already heated up from cooking the main course). Make this in the oven and your house will smell like cranberry-orange goodness!
- sprinkle with powdered sugar (this part is optional but really makes this dish look pretty!
- drizzle with honey while warm before serving.
