What’s better than pizza? Pizza made in a wood fired pizza oven! And the easiest way to turn your Green Mountain Grills Pellet smoker into a pizza oven is by getting the Green Mountain Grill pizza oven insert!

Y’all know I have a long history with pizza. I’ve made it all different ways on the grill. If you have been thinking of getting a pellet smoker and like the idea of using to make pizza, the pizza oven attachment available with the Green Mountain Grills should play into your decision. You can read my full review of the Green Mountain Grill Daniel Boone here, as well as full instructions on how to successfully use the Pizza Oven attachment for the Green Mountain Grill here.

When you go to make pizza, dough is the big deciding factor. Should you make your own or buy store bought dough? If you have the patience, time and energy to make your own dough, I’ve included a recipe below.

You can also buy the pizza dough kits from Urban Slicer that are formulated for using on the grill. Or, you can pick up at your grocery store – these days most stores stock pre made dough which makes your life easier! Having said that, here is the dough recipe I’ve been using for years!

And we can all agree sometimes simplicity is best. Like with a wood fired margherita pizza made with fresh mozzarella and  garnished with fresh basil. What are your favorite pizza toppings?? Leave me a comment below!

Description

Want to turn your backyard into a pizzeria? With the Green Mountain Grill Pellet smoker- the pizza oven attachment makes wood fired pizza in your backyard possible! Here is a simple recipe for wood fired margherita pizza.

Ingredients

Scale

PIZZA DOUGH RECIPE:

Adapted from Southern Living Magazine

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 envelope dry active yeast (1/4 oz)
  • 2 tsp honey
    ~~~~~~~
  • 3 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • Vegetable cooking spray
TOPPINGS:
  • 1/2 cup marinara sauce
  • 8 oz fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced into 1/4” thick pieces
  • large bunch fresh basil
Instructions
Process the first 4 ingredients in a food processor if you have one. Then add flour and salt l pulse 6-8 times until the dough forms a ball and leaves the side of the bowl. You can add more water if necessary. * If you don’t have a food processor, do this by hand, it will just take longer….
Place the dough in a large bowl coated with coking spray, cover and chill 2 hours..
Next steps:
Roll the dough onto a lightly floured surface, spreading it evenly in a circle for the pizzas. This recipe will make approximately 2 large pizzas or 4 smaller pizzas.
Next, sprinkle your cutting board or pizza peel with flour, then dust it with corn meal. Place the dough on the cutting board/pizza peel and layer with sauce. Get your dough thinly spread out so it cooks evenly in the smoker. I find thinner crust works best for cooking evenly so you don't get doughy parts.
Next, add your fresh mozzarella.
Follow the instructions for the Green Mountain Grill Pizza Oven insert and place it into Pizza Oven mode via the app. Set the temperature to 225, and once it has reached temp, slide the pizza into the pizza oven attachment. Let the pizza cook 4-8 minutes or until the cheese is bubbling and the pizza has begun to brown. You will need to turn the pizza once during the process to ensure it cooks evenly.
Garnish with fresh basil at the end before serving.
