I love a good margarita, but I don’t love all the calories! I developed this Perfect Skinny Margarita so I can still enjoy one of my favorite cocktails without the extra calories!
Did you know the average margarita can top up to 500 calories! Those sugary mixes are loaded in calories and are a far cry from a true margarita, which is a simple mix of tequila, lime and triple sec.
My skinny margaritas have only a few choice ingredients making it a refreshing cocktail to enjoy guilt free. It combines tequila, a bit of agave syrup, lime juice, and lime flavored soda water. The soda water adds a nice touch of effervescence, plus, this drink should be served in a tall glass so it will last you a bit longer!
I like to serve my margaritas in my fun Vintage Flamingo Glasses, and I often rim them with my Sunshine State of Mind Craft BBQ Rub and Cocktail Rimmer instead of salt. It makes for the PERFECT Margarita if I do say so myself! If you are looking to try a Rub that compliments Seafood, Chicken, Pork and Veggies, then give Sunshine State of Mind a Try! You’ll see why its referred to as “the Crack of BBQ Rubs”! Use code Sunshine for 5% off!
If you haven’t noticed, I’m a love of all tequila drinks that are mixed with citrus so I recommend you check out my Grilled Paloma Cocktail recipe while you’re here. I promise you won’t be disappointed. If you are looking for a fun alternative to a margarita, the Paloma is the Margarita’s BFF. And you might just be a convert!
Sunshine State of Mind Margarita
- Total Time: 5 minutes
- Yield: 2 cocktails 1x
Description
This naturally skinny margarita gets a nice flavor boost by being rimmed with GrillGirl's Sunshine State of Mind Cocktail Rimmer, infusing every sip with the essence of Kaffir lime, Granulated honey, Himalayan Salt, Orange peel and coriander.
Ingredients
This recipe makes two cocktails.
- 4 oz tequila
- 2 teaspoons agave syrup (ie, one teaspoons per drink)
- dash of orange juice, triple sec or cointreau (don't overdo it, but this does cut the tartness a bit of the limes)
- Juice of two large limes, plus an additional lime for garnish.
- 1–1/2 cans or 12 ounces of lime flavored sparkling water
- 2–3 tbsp Sunshine State of Mind Craft BBQ Rub and Cocktail Rimmer
Instructions
Combine the tequila, agave syrup, lime juice in a cocktail shaker with some ice in a cocktail shaker and shake profusely to help dissolve the agave syrup. Using the leftover lime, rub it around the rim of the glass to wet the glass on the edges- this is where the rub is going to adhere to. Next and then Pour into a Collins glass filled with ice, and then add soda water. If you like your margaritas a bit sweeter, I add a bit of stevia in the raw to my glass.
If you feel like you want your ‘rita a bit sweeter, add a touch of stevia or monk fruit sweetener to keep the calories low. By starting with a base of agave, it keeps it tasting natural, not artificial.

Thank you for sharing. I wasn’t impressed the mixes for skinny margaritas on the market. And I really think this version will be very impressive. Hope I have a lime now so I can go ahead and make one margarita.
Hi Penny, I agree, they’re often made with weird non-nutritive sweeteners. I also use stevia in the raw with my skinny cocktails too. Best of luck!!
