I heart hot sauce. So when I saw this huge container of habaneros on sale for a steal, I decided it was time make a huge batch of hot sauce. I love making a big batch of hot sauce and giving away jars to friends, family and neighbors as a parting gift. This recipe is a variation of the recipe I found on the back of the box of peppers I bought at B.J.’s wholesale club. It looked so similar to recipes I’ve seen from the Islands that I figured I’d give it a try and it did not disappoint. This turned out very similar to Suzie’s hot sauce from Antigua that I am highly addicted to. I made a few tweaks and the recipe is below:

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup chopped carrots
  • ½ cup chopped onions
  • 5 cloves garlic minced
  • 6 habanero peppers stems removed
  • ¼ cup water
  • ¼ cup lime juice
  • 1 tbsp lime zest
  • ¼ cup white vinegar
  • 1 tomato
  • sea salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Heat the oil in a sauce pan over medium heat. Cook and stir the carrots, oil, onion, and garlic in the hot oil until soft, about 10 minutes. Transfer the mixture to a blender or food processor. Add the habanero peppers, water, lime juice, vinegar, tomato and lime zest to the blender/processor and blend until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste, transfer the mixture to a saucepan and simmer for 3-5 minutes. Simmering at the end gives the sauce a more liquid consistency.

  1. I love making sauces too, and for the same reason, a stash and to give to friends. Only one problem with this one, I’m afraid of Habaneros. I picture my tongue melting in my mouth. 🙂

    1. Hi Lea Ann. This one definitely has some kick but you can always scale back on the peppers 🙂

    1. Larry, believe it or not I’ve had more issues chopping jalapenos in the past. Because I didn’t have to do to much with them other than chop the stems off, it didn’t make me have to get to close to any seeds making my nose run etc. All in all I didn’t even wear a respirator like i normally do when making sauce. 🙂

  2. Hey Robin, Habaneros are nice and all, but I think This would be awesome with 1 ghost chilli substituted.

    1. Eric, you are right. one ghost chili pepper would take the awesomeness level up a few notches. However I probably wouldn’t be able to give it to any of my friends. 🙂

    1. bought them somewhere online when I was going through my hotsauce making phases where all i did was make hotsauce lol

  3. Hi Robyn,
Recipe sounds great. I can’t wait to try it tomorrow!!

How much does it make, roughly?
I just want to know how many bottles to gather

    Thanks!

    1. Kymbo- should make at least 4 small jars. Enough to keep you in heat for a long time. 🙂 Enjoy!

  4. Hi, Robyn,

Just stumbled across your site while looking for a recipe for as my little plants are fruiting like crazy.

This is my first time making my own hot sauce so I have a quick question about bottling. Do you do a hot water bath or simply pop them in any clean container and refrigerate? About how long do they keep?

Thanks so much for your help. You’ve made a new fan down under of someone trying to get over being intimidated by her grill!

    1. Heather-
I just use a clean jar and put them in the refrigerator. However, if you do the water bath I’m assuming you wouldn’t have to refrigerate which will save you room in your refrigerator. Good luck!

  6. Hi, Robyn!

I’m gonna try this tomorrow. I have some questions tho:
    1. Is this sauce tabasco like?
    2. For how long can I keep it in the fridge before it turns bad?
    3. Is the sauce chunky?

    Gretz from Sweden!

    1. Hi Jake-
This sauce is not as hot or quite as vinegary as tabasco. I usually use much more cholla than I can Tabasco. It is more like a Mexican hot sauce, similar to tapatio if you have ever tried that. Good luck!!

  7. Just made the sauce, came out great! For the spicy minded, this is not very spicy at all, has just the right amount of flavor enhancer kick.

Good job an thank you for sharing!!!

    1. Dwayne- you are right, this is not overbearingly hot. I’m glad you enjoyed and thanks for leaving a comment! 🙂
