I love the friendships I have made online. So when some of my BBQ Foodie instagram friends asked if I wanted to be part of a video montage of fun Halloween Recipes that could be made on the grill, I said “absolutely”.
Normally, when I think of Halloween food, my first thought is candy and sweets. I was excited to dig into the world of non-sweet Halloween food with this group since Halloween is already a Holiday on full sugar overload. And it’s pretty awesome to see that you can have kid friendly Halloween food that isn’t loaded in sugar like these Meatball Mummies. If you look at the video we made together, you’ll see lots of spooky Halloween recipes that can be a full blown meal like the Hotdog Mummies, stuffed Jack-O-Lanterns Made from Orange Bell Peppers, Bat Chicken Wings, “Feet” loaf (aka meatloaf that looks like feet lol!) and a “Spooky” pizza.
That’s why I was so excited to find this Meatball Mummy recipe online from High Heels and Grills. I tweaked and made mine on the pellet smoker. This recipe uses crescent rolls, frozen meatballs, olives and marinara sauce. There are plenty of recipes for this online, I tweaked this slightly and made them on my pellet smoker so they benefit from the smoky flavor of being “baked” on the grill. However, these can easily be made in your oven.
While these mummies are definitely spooktacular (see what I did there? lol) they also look a lot like minions. So, if you have kids who love Minions and you are looking for a minion themed party food, this is also the perfect appetizer!
Here are my tips for ensuring these turn out great:
- Use a pizza cutter when cutting the crescent roll dough and make sure the strips stay 1/4″ thick – otherwise the dough doesn’t cook evenly.
- I like to use parchment paper on my baking sheet to ensure the mummies don’t stick and clean up is a breeze!

- Total Time: 30 minutes
- Yield: 6 appetizer sized servings 1x
Description
These Kid Friendly “Mummy Meatballs” made from frozen meatballs rolled in crescent dough are an easy, fun way to make “Spooky” food for Halloween. Alternately, these are great for a Minion themed party.
Ingredients
- 1 tube crescent rolls
- 14 oz frozen meatballs (I used Turkey Meatballs)
- 1 4 oz can sliced olives, water drained.
- 1/2 cup marinara sauce- for putting behind the “eyes” and also for dipping.
Instructions
Preheat your pellet smoker or oven to 350 degrees.
Using a pizza cutter, cut the crescent rolls into 1/4″ inch strips. Wrap the strips around the meatball, making them look like a mummy. Leave a small space to put the olive “eyes”.
Dip the olive into a small amount of marinara, using the marinara as the “glue” that holds the olive “eye” onto the meatball. Do this for the entire package of meatballs until all meatballs are wrapped in dough and have their eyes attached.
Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the dough begins to brown and the meatballs are cooked through.
Serve with remaining (heated) marinara for dipping!
Notes
Can optionally be served as “Minion” meatballs.
