I love grilled cocktails. I learned about the idea at Kingsford University a few years back and it has been a major game changer for me. By throwing your beverage ingredients onto the grill you can add serious flavor depth, not to mention it just looks cool when you have guests over.

Much the same way you can make grilled lemonade, I decided to make a smoky “Greyhound” by putting grapefruit on the grill to let it caramelize on the grill and enhance the flavors. I paired this with vodka and ginger infused honey for an easy to make and refreshing summer (year-round!) cocktail.

I actually developed and made this recipe on camera for my intro to the Food Network’s Chopped Grillmasters, but most of it got edited out. Either way, you can bet I was the only one making grilled cocktails out in the middle of the Arizona desert. All those other guys were grilling meat. Luckily for me, I got to drink my dish afterwards!

Grilled the grapefruit caramelizes the sugar and actually brings out its sweetness while also adding subtle smoky flavor.

  • Author: Robyn
  • Yield: this will make 2 cocktails

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large grapefruit, cut in half
  • 1 tblsp honey
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 4 oz vodka
  • ice, water to taste

Instructions

Preheat your grill to medium direct heat (about 350 degrees). Grill the grapefruit until deep char marks form. Meanwhile, combine ginger and honey. Juice the grapefruit in a reserve container. Combine the honey and ginger and reserve. In two cocktail glasses, add ice, then add 2 oz. vodka per glass. Divide the honey evenly among the glasses. Add the grapefruit juice and stir. If the grapefruit  juice is too tart, you can add a little water.

I like to grill a bunch of grapefruit at once so I have them on hand in the case that I want a spontaneous Smoky Greyhound. This really kicks up your average greyhound up a notch!
