Bacon infused moonshine bloody mary at Tupelo Honey. I’m in love.

Scott and I recently took a mini vacation to Asheville, a quaint town in the heart of the NC Mountains, and one of my favorite places on earth. We rented a dog friendly cabin 30 minutes outside of town, in the middle of the woods nestled next to a river. We spent the week hiking with the dogs and ended the trip staying in downtown Asheville, close to the wedding we were going to that spurred this trip in the first place.

I rarely do restaurant reviews on this site. Why? Because I cook all the time and I don’t review a restaurant unless it really warrants being written about. Tupelo Honey warrants being written about. This is the second time I’ve been to Tupelo Honey and I must say, it was one of the trip highlights for me. This is a “New Southern” restaurant- they serve classic Southern dishes, with a modern twist.

I started out with a bacon infused moonshine bloody mary. WOW. Next, they served me a big ol’ fluffy biscuit with homemade berry jam.

Fried okra, doused in hot sauce. My version of heaven on earth!

I’m a sucker for Southern style veggies, in fact, one of my earliest food memories is of my Grandma making fried okra in an iron skillet on the stove top at their house in Jackson, MS. Ahh, how I love fried okra.

Goat cheese grits, kale and cheesy smashed cauliflower. YUM!

So I ordered

the veggie plate- fried okra, goat cheese grits, kale, and cheesy smashed cauliflower. OMG. Other dishes you may want to try- The Fried Green Tomatoes, Hot Pimiento Cheese (doesn’t get more Southern than Pimiento Cheese), The Southern Fried Chicken BLT, or the Sunburst Mountain Trout with Spinach Buerre Blanc.

Our cute cabin near Asheville, NC- aplty titled “Rivertime”.

Scott and I had such a blast in Asheville and had flashbacks from our mtn days in college (I was in Boone, NC at Appalachian State and he was at the University of Montana). We have visions of renting a house there next summer and workshifting (I work from home and he can too) so we can kayak and mountain bike on the weekends. Only time will tell but I know Tupelo Honey will be the first place I stop the next time we make it up to Asheville.
