Thanks to Robyn, my love of healthy cooking and delicious marinades no longer is confined to the inside of my kitchen! Slowly but surely learning my way around the grill. Try this one out on flank or thin cut sirloin!
    1 tbsp Hoison
1 tbsp soy sauce or Braggs liquid aminos as a healthy very low salt substitute
    1 tbsp peanut oil
    2 cloves crushed garlic
    1/4 c chopped cilantro
    Black pepper
Red chili flake to your liking
    1/2 tsp fresh chopped ginger
3 stalks green onion finely chopped
    Juice from one small orange
Food processor or blender makes this very fast and easy, marinate overnight or a minimum of 4 hours.
As far as the grill goes…Ill let Robyn take it from here! Xoxoxo

This is a refreshing side dish and one of my favorites. The heat from the jalapeno is quelled by the sugar but not before an initial kick.

    Spicy Carrot Sambal

    2 tablespoons vegetable oil
    6 whole cloves garlic, peeled
    Jalapeno. minced with seeds
    2 tablespoons sugar
    Tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice
    2 teaspoons fish sauce
8 ounces carrots. peeled and grated
Scallion (white and green parts) thinly sliced
    3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
Put the oil, garlic, and jalapeno in a small skillet over medium
heat and cook, stirring, until the garlic is lightly browned and
    fragrant, about 5 minutes.
Put the sugar in a bowl and stir in the garlic mixture; cool. Add the lime juice and fish sauce and stir to dissolve the sugar completely.
Add the carrots, scallion, and cilantro and toss.

May be refrigerated in a tightly sealed container for up to 3 days.

  29. Steven Munster April 26, 2013 at 1:01 pm #

Shared and liked also. Would love to win! My favorite way of grilling steaks is the T-Rex method on our Big Green Eggs. Get that sucker as hot as possible, and drop the steaks on a cast iron grate for 45 seconds, rotate 90 degrees and leave for another 45 seconds. Flip it and repeat. The take it off to bring the temp down and add some wood chips. Not too many for us b/c we don’t like steaks too smokey. We mainly use Jack Daniels wood barrel chips, but have used others. Once the Egg is down to about 375, put the steaks back on and roast till about 130 degrees, let rest tented for about 5 min and enjoy!

    Cool contest!

    Thanks, Steve

  31. Tammy Anderson April 26, 2013 at 1:39 pm #

My favorite way to cook steak is to season them with Worcestershire, mustard, salt, pepper and season salt. Put it on your favorite steak and let it marinade for a few hours then cook slowly on grill and enjoy. Oh soooo good!!!

I’d enter this contest for the thermapen alone!

  53. Sara @SneakySpoons April 29, 2013 at 9:02 am #

What a cool giveaway! I love the portable grill. It would be great in our small apartment. I am adding it to our amazon wish list. :)

  54. Greg April 29, 2013 at 10:05 am #

    Hey Robyn,

That Thermapen would save many of my cooks – especially fish which I have been trying to grill more in an effort to eat better (which your site helps with). I find fish to be very difficult to time correctly and using my little dial thermometer just doesn’t work. It takes too long to get a read!

Also, my wife has been getting into grilling with me more, and she has finally gotten over her fear of the BGE and started doing some Egging. I still can’t figure out why people fear the Egg :-).

I live in Canada and I still grill year round but a Thermapen would certainly make it a much less painful experience. Going out and checking temps when it’s freezing cold out is not fun. Getting in and out in a flash with the Thermapen would make my cold fingertips and nose very happy. And it would get my wife more into year round grilling. Right now, she is a ‘fairweather griller.’ Not having to brave the winter will make her a year round griller like us.

An even bigger reason why speed and accuracy is important is we have an 8 month old baby (our first) and to say he is a lot of work is an understatement. It’s all fun, amazing, and rewarding of course but it’s still time consuming. Being able to check my temps before he has the time to pull my glasses off my face and throw them on the grill would be great.

That little hibachi looks so cool too and it would come in so handy later this year for our son’s first birthday as we are planning on having a picnic party at a park. It will be great to have that to grill up some burgers and do the finish on some West Indies Wings at the park!

I’m always excited to try new things so the Red Bone products would be fun. And steak….what else needs to be said?

I tweeted the contest (I’m Adequate_Dad). Unfortunately I am not very popular so I don’t know how far it will reach! Please don’t judge me based on my number of friends :-). I’m spending too much time checking temps to gain more followers.

  55. Robyn April 29, 2013 at 10:24 am #

Thanks so much Justin!! You are equally a great cook! That pled fish dip- that stuff is like crack rock!!

  56. Robyn April 29, 2013 at 10:29 am #

Greg- you have an 8 month old? I’m surprised you have time to leave a comment on my blog! I would probably be more of a fair weather griller if I didn’t live in South Florida as well, I don’t blame your wife! You guys are hard core- I love it!

That’s exactly what this grill is- a picnic grill. Not meant for all the time but super easy to transport for a quick picnic outside somewhere. Sounds like you’ve got an awesome use for it!
